Virtual Conference FAQ's

WHAT WILL A VIRTUAL CONFERENCE LOOK LIKE?
As we move the biennial conference online, we are crafting a virtual program that allows us to offer the same informative and timely content from presenters with opportunities to connect with members and sponsors from across the region, but in new ways. Dates will remain the same: October 20-23, 2020.

WHY ATTEND A VIRTUAL CONFERENCE?
  • See It All: With a variety of content and formats, many recorded to watch on-demand, a virtual conference means you don’t have to choose between conflicting sessions. You can see them all.
  • Cost Savings: Save money on reduced registration fees and no travel or hotel expenses.
  • Time Savings: Less travel time means more time to focus on the conference sessions and networking or attend to work and family responsibilities.
  • Flexibility: Participants will have access to the full schedule of meetings, either live or recorded, and can move easily between sessions.
  • Networking Opportunities: Attendees and sponsors can connect with a larger audience, many of whom may have not attended due to cost and travel constraints.
  • Sustainability: By eliminating the need for travel and reducing the energy required for an in-person event, our virtual conference will have a much smaller carbon footprint.

WHAT IS THE NAME OF THE VIRTUAL PLATFORM?
We are using Cadmium/EventScribe. Cadmium has a long history of providing online technical program review services, so they are a good fit for The Longleaf Alliance.

WHEN WILL I BE ABLE TO LOG IN TO THE SITE?
The site will be available for you to log in around October 15th. At that time, you will be able to build your profile, build your own agenda for the conference by selecting the sessions you want to attend, and start watching the on demand/recorded technical talks.

WHAT TIME ZONE WILL THE EVENTS BE IN?
All events will be held in Eastern Standard time.

WILL MY COMPUTER NEED ANY SPECIAL PROGRAMS BEFORE I CAN PARTICIPATE?
The ideal web browser for Cadmium is Google Chrome. Please install Chrome in advance and make it your preferred browser.

Some of the events will be using Cadmium’s internal chat function VideoChat, and that works best with your VPN disabled so it is not competing for bandwidth. Some of the social events, and the trade show will be using this format. Additionally, a few meetings on the last day will be using Zoom. It will work best for you if you have Zoom downloaded in advance.

WILL I BE ABLE TO PREVIEW ANY OF THE TALKS IN ADVANCE?
Yes, all of the technical talks and posters will be available in advance, although we have built time into the schedule on Tuesday for you to watch them. The live portion of the event on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, will feature Q & A sessions with each of the technical presenters, by tracks, as well as panel discussions on critical topics. It is important that you schedule time to watch the on demand talks of importance to you so you can make the best of your time watching the live Q & A and panel discussions.

WILL I BE ABLE TO WATCH TALKS AFTER THE EVENT?
Yes, they will be available on the Cadmium site for one year.

WILL I BE ABLE TO CONNECT WITH PARTNER ORGANIZATIONS OR MY COLLEAGUES THROUGH THE VIRTUAL PLATFORM?
There are many ways to connect with others throughout the conference using the internal chat function either publicly or privately. There will be a virtual trade show for you to visit with partnering organizations.

WILL SOMEONE BE AVAILABLE TO HELP ME IF I HAVE TROUBLE?
Yes, there will be a tech help desk and a registration desk open prior to and during the event.

Thank You To Our Sponsors!

We appreciate your support and commitments at a time with so many unknowns.  The virtual conference format will still provide a great opportunity to engage with longleaf enthusiasts from across the range.

About the Conference

The Biennial Longleaf Conference, sponsored by The Longleaf Alliance, is a regional conference that is focused on the restoration and conservation of the longleaf ecosystem that once dominated the landscape within the southeastern United States. The conference provides the opportunity for people from all over the southeast to get together, share, learn, and celebrate longleaf. It also serves as a rallying spot for several other organizations and government agencies seeking to stage additional events in order to better collaborate on the conference topics.

This conference is open to individuals, private landowners, land managers, wildlife biologists, conservation groups, consultants, university researchers, forestry professionals, agency and outreach personnel who share an interest in restoration of the longleaf pine ecosystem. On average, attendance ranges from 250-400 depending on conference location. The conference also draws from 25-35 exhibitors and vendors.
